Shamil Musaev (19-0-1) is taking MMA by storm in 2024. “The Silent Assassin” has knifed through the PFL welterweight division with ferocity. Now he has a title fight in his sights for PFL’s 1-million-dollar prize shimmering on the horizon.
Shamil was born in Kizlyar, Russia, in the Republic of Dagestan in 1994. Martial arts is integral to the Caucuses region of Southern Russia and Musaev began his journey with Wushu Sanda at age 6. He was coached by acclaimed Dagestani Wushu coach Magomedovich Magomedaminov. He graduated from Akhmatov Sports Club, a school focusing on martial arts in addition to education. Along his amateur path he won a world Wushu championship in addition to two other amateur championships in other martial arts. He compiled a 4 and 1 amateur record in MMA and captured M-1 Global’s Russian amateur belt. Shamil turned pro in 2013 and won his first fifteen fights before his only taste of adversity in the big leagues, a surprise draw with Michał Pietrzak.
Since that draw, Musaev has reeled off highlight reel finishes and moved to PFL. The move stateside has afforded him more notoriety for his striking expertise. Even though he hails from wrestling-rich Dagestan, “The Silent Assassin” prefers the fight to stay standing evidenced by 11 of 13 finishes being of the KO/TKO variety. On November 29 Shamil faces his toughest test yet in Magomed Umalatov (17-0). It’s some good old Russian on Russian crime, get your popcorn ready.
