David Onama (8-1) lost his debut in the octagon just fifteen days after his last fight, but his stock rose like a newfound crypto coin. Onama nearly won a decision against a top prospect in Mason Jones (11-1) and quickly became a fellow promising prospect in the lightweight division. Saturday, 2/19, David drops down ten pounds to Featherweight for an intriguing matchup at UFC Vegas 48.
David was born in Kyangwali, Uganda in 1994. It is a refugee settlement in western Uganda started by Rwandans in the 1960s. now in 2021, it’s home to over 125,000 people. His family came to the US when David was 10 and they must’ve watched UFC over in Uganda because David was set on starting a dream to become a champion fighter as soon as possible. He found coach and current UFC Welterweight James Krause with Glory MMA in Kansas City, Missouri and hasn’t looked back.
Now the FAC featherweight champ is a UFC 145 pounder with a record of 8 and 1, all wins finished. The one blemish came in his first octagon action, in which he stepped up ten lbs. to Lightweight just fifteen days after his last FAC bout to face rising young Welshman Mason Jones. He lost a unanimous decision but all rounds were closely contested and his stock is sky high entering UFC Vegas 48. Battle-tested striker Gabriel “Moggly” Benitez (22-10) will look to spoil the coming-out party on Saturday, 2/19, going down at 4 PM ET.
