One to Watch on The Contender Series wk. 7: Taylor Johnson

“Tombstone” Taylor Johnson aims to score his sixth first round knockout, and a UFC contract to boot, on The Contender Series: Week 7.   The middleweight (185 lbs.) wrestler from California has taken MMA fans by storm, finishing all of his opponents before the third round.

He fights out of Victory MMA in San Diego, California.  It’s a small but mighty team with the likes of MMA legend Dean Lister and Navy SEAL/BJJ black belt/podcaster Jocko Willink.  A far cry from the breeding grounds of American Top Team and Jackson Wink, but it’s home to Johnson and so far, so good.

The former NAIA college wrestling champion started MMA in 2016 as an amateur and has not looked back, collecting 6 finishes across all pro and amateur bouts.  “Tombstone” has a frantic pace, searching for power shots and takedowns to get the action to the mat.  His top pressure is harsh and his grappling speed is fierce.  It’s a terrible combo for his opponents and unsurprisingly has ended five of six by ground and pound.

Andre Muniz (17-4) will try to stay on the feet against Johnson in their Contender Series bout.  The victor will hope to earn a UFC contract on Tuesday, 8/6!
